Since 1984, Southwood Psychiatric Hospital has been devoted to providing the most comprehensive levels of care possible in order to address the needs of as many children and adolescents that we can. As the region’s only behavioral health hospital solely dedicated to providing children and adolescents with quality mental health care, education, and assisted living services, Southwood provides treatment to youth between the ages of 4 and 21 through varying levels of care.
The programming options offered here at Southwood Psychiatric Hospital include the following:
- Our acute inpatient psychiatric care provides services for children and adolescents between the ages of 4 and 18. This program is designed for male and female youth who have severe emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental disabilities. By utilizing a vast array of services, the interdisciplinary team, in conjunction with the child and his or her family, identify presenting problems, administer an assessment, and then target an appropriate plan of action that meets the treatment needs of the child or adolescent. The average length of stay in this program is six days, however, the actual length of time spent is determined based on each individual’s needs. The focus of inpatient treatment is crisis evaluation, diagnosis, stabilization, initiation of treatment, and linkage within the community for continuing care resources.
- Our Intellectual Disability Disorders / Autism Spectrum Disorder (IDD/ASD) Program is a residential program that provides treatment for males between the ages of 6 and 21 who are facing the emotional, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental challenges that accompany the presence of intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder. With a staff-to-patient ratio of 1:4, all children and adolescents engaged in this program benefit from the thorough support that he needs in order to be successful during the treatment process.
- Our CHOICES Residential Treatment Facility provides programming for male adolescents between the ages of 10 and 21 who are suffering from significant mental health issues and who have a history of engaging in inappropriate sexual behaviors. This program provides the highest level of structure and supervision while offering co-occurring, intensive, and specific treatment based on the cognitive-behavioral therapy model of relapse prevention. Priority is given to making sure that each patient in this program meets their treatment goals and develops sufficient skills so that they are successful in stepping down to a lower level of care.
- Our Family Based Mental Health Services (FBMHS) Program is a service provided by a team that is composed of Master’s level clinicians and mental health workers who incorporate intensive home therapy, casework services, and family support services in the care they provide to the populations served. Furthermore, crisis stabilization services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
