As a treatment center that focuses solely on providing optimal care for children and adolescents, Southwood Psychiatric Hospital offers distinct programming that addresses the concerns that arise as the result of the presence of cognitive disabilities and developmental delays, as well as any emotional or behavioral disturbances.
The knowledge and implementation of basic principles of applied behavior analysis is the primary focus of care administered through the programming options that are tailored to meet the needs of children and adolescents who are struggling with the various challenges of the following disorders:
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Asperger’s disorder
- Autism spectrum disorder
- Intellectual disability disorder
When treating these conditions, the patient’s treatment team will begin by providing a thorough functional behavioral analysis (FBA). This analysis includes a review of the child’s medical and clinical charts, the child’s individualized education plan (IEP) and ICMP, an interview with the child’s family, interviews with other professionals who have worked with the child, and an interview with the child, as well as through the use of clinical assessments and direct observation.
Once this FBA has been successfully compiled, a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan is developed. This treatment plan is then implemented by an interdisciplinary team who will meet regularly to review the progress that the child is making towards fulfilling short-term objectives and attaining long-term goals. The approach taken is one that is based on each child’s personal strengths, developmental stage, and cognitive capabilities. All treatment is delivered in an environment that is fully therapeutic and conducive to healing, ensuring that a youth’s stay is as brief and as intensive as possible.
Whatever the needs of the children and adolescents entrusted into our care may be, the compassionate and knowledgeable staff at Southwood Psychiatric Hospital will assist them in learning the tools needed to overcome their challenges and developing the confidence they need to face their futures with a bright and hopeful outlook.
